This set of twinned pens allows for small messages to be sent and received all across the Material. Each is connected at rest with a custom tablet, which can have paper slotted in to avoid pushing and tearing.

The connection is first established by handing another person one of the two pens. After that, for the basic model, each side can write up to 40 words to the other before the pens run out of ink for the day. The words need not be within a single message, allowing for some back and forth. This limits resets every day at dawn.

While a pen is receiving a message, it is animated on its own, mirroring the writing pen's movement. During this time, it cannot be used to send messages, and any attempt to stop the pen requires a Strength (Athletics) check, DC 18. On a success, both linked pens are immobilized, alerting the writer, and five words are lost for the day. Once the writer lets go of the immobilized pen, control is sent over the the other side, which may either write their message or return the pen to its tablet slot.

The messages are written in a language the writer knows. The receiver also doesn't automatically know who is writing the message, which might require words be spent to identify each other. The message may also be in code, with all the associated checks.

Sketches may also be sent through, at a variable cost in words (to be decided by DM).
