Fate of the Unseen
Fate of the Unseen
Wondrous Item, Very Rare (requires attunement)
This piece of malachite is formed in a fibrous manner, as though its surface were woven rather than grown. A few spots on it betray its mineral nature, showing where the line-like veins grew. When looking at it indirectly, such as in the corner of one's sight, the Fate seems to nearly fade into the background. This is a small yet powerful shard of S̶͓̓é̴̚r̵̈́͑a̵͛͝d̷̓͆ĕ̶̯z̸͌, and much time has been put into refining it. After holding it for a long, uninterrupted time, one's reflection grows fainter, as if the surface it is being viewed on were foggy for that individual.
To attune to this Fate, you must undergo a specific ritual. A creature must spend 24 uninterrupted hours blindfolded and mute, meditating alone in darkness. One bearer of Fate or a Cleric must silently observe both the beginning and end of the ritual. At the end, the shard is absorbed into the creature's skin, typically vanishing near the neck or somewhere near the lungs or ribs.
Wherever it settles, this Fate cannot be seen by any Creature observing the outside of the Attuned Creature's body. While attuned to this Fate, you may eventually hear the whispers of the Visionary Wave.
Once attuned, you may only unattune to this item by dying or through the effects of a Wish spell.
Attempting to remove the Fate forcefully or without proper release rituals may cause permanent psychic damage, loss of cognitive function in the form of degenerative neural conditions, face blindness, body deformities caused by malachite growths, and/or identity bleed.
While attuned to this item, you gain the following benefits:
- Any grafted Fate you wear cannot be seen or sensed unless you allow it. Means of detecting any Fate you are attuned to always fail unless the creature succeeds on a DC 20 intelligence (Arcana) check.
- You are immune to effects that would sense your emotions, read your thoughts, or detect your location through divination magic. You must be aware of such effect in order to block it. Any spellcaster that is aware of the Fate's existence and has studied its nature may make a contested Arcana check versus an Intelligence Saving Throw with advantage to bypass the Fate's immunity. On a successful roll 10 over your Saving Throw, the spellcaster becomes immune to this Fate's blocking effects for 24 hours.
- As a reaction to being targeted by a spell that detects or identifies your nature, you can cause the caster to receive false or blank information. You may use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest.
- You gain advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to avoid magical detection or observation. Additionally, you can choose to not be perceived on reflections. If you are seen through a scrying spell, you may choose to only appear as a blurred humanoid form.
